Voice Lab: A 5-Week Journey to Unlock Vocal Power and Play

This is a small-cohort course with limited spots, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis—apply now to secure your place!

Voice Lab is a 5-week (4 session, see dates), small cohort course in Edinburgh where you’ll get to discover and play with the full potential of your voice, whether you're an actor, comedian, or just want to explore how your voice works.

It’s hands-on and practical, with a combination of small group weekly sessions and one-on-one coaching to make sure you get what you need.

You’ll walk away with more confidence and a toolkit of techniques to use your voice in different situations, all in a relaxed, playful way.

What the Course Offers

This isn’t just a voice course—it’s a guided, playful exploration of your voice, with 4 in-person workshops over 5 weeks, plus a short private coaching call to align the course with your unique needs, and extra online support videos.

Each week, we’ll meet for a 2-hour session packed with physical, practical voice work in a small, supportive group. You’ll also get a one-to-one coaching call at the start to help tailor the course to what you need.

Between sessions, you’ll have access to optional voice ‘missions’ and video warm-ups on the online platform. You can explore these at your own pace — use as many or as few as you like. The goal is to find the voice tools that work for you, so take what’s helpful and leave the rest.

This is about building a toolkit of techniques, games, and approaches that actually work for you, so you can experiment, play, and find more confidence and freedom in your voice — without it feeling like homework.

Who Is It For?

This course is open to people looking to explore their voice in a playful, practical way at a pace that is tailored to you.

While performance backgrounds like acting, improvisation, comedy, or even physical activities such as yoga can enhance the experience, they’re not required. It’s really about getting to know your own unique voice, and everyone's starting point is different.

This is not a singing course, though singers are welcome — it’s focused on the spoken voice and how we use it in various situations, whether that’s for performance, public speaking, or just communicating more confidently in everyday life.

About Alex

Alex Owen-Hill is a professional voice coach, improviser, voice researcher, and clown. Trained at the famously strict École Philippe Gaulier for clown and comic acting, he brings a unique mix of technical voice expertise and playful exploration to his coaching. His approach blends improvisation, comedy, and voice science, creating a dynamic and engaging learning experience.

With certifications in Gender-Affirming Voice Work, Accent and Dialect Coaching, and Estill Voice Training (Levels 1 & 2), Alex combines research-backed methods with a deep understanding of performance. He is currently undertaking an MA in Voice, specializing in Neurodivergent Voices and Authenticity, making his work especially relevant for those navigating voice and identity.

Alex’s coaching is highly adaptable, neurodivergence-friendly, and designed to help each individual build their own voice toolkit—not just follow a set of exercises. Whether you're an experienced performer or just starting out, his sessions encourage experimentation, play, and a deeper connection to your own voice.

What's Going to Happen?

The course kicks off on Wednesday March 26th, with one in-person workshop per week (and a break on the 9th April, see the dates section for more info).

These sessions will take place in-person at Summerhall, Edinburgh, where we’ll do practical exercises, group work, and individual coaching. Most of the work in sessions involves practical voice exercises and small breakout activities.

Outside of the workshop sessions, you’ll have access to a dedicated WhatsApp group for discussion, questions, and ongoing support. There’s also an online platform with videos and extra content to help you dive deeper and reinforce what we cover each week.

You will also have a one-to-one coaching call with Alex at some point during the first two weeks to tailor the course to your specific voice needs.
