How do you learn lines? How do you write lines? How do you rehearse lines? … all good questions. And I answer them here!… but not in that order.
You can find a bunch of different information all over the World of the Internet about how to write and rehearse things. But a lot of that advice misses something vital — it doesn’t help you avoid the trap of “sounding rehearsed” or… to be blunt… “sounding boring.”
Never fear! Sounding boring or rehearsed isn’t a character flaw… it’s usually just a sign that the performer hasn’t followed the right rehearsal process.
Here, I present a 5 step process for writing something in your voice, memorizing it properly, and rehearsing so you become bullet-proof by the time of the performance.
I also talk about things like:
* Why it’s better to speak it first AS you write it
* Why “over-rehearsal” is a myth
* A super-useful line memorisation trick + the nighttime line-learning hack
* Fun ways to get text “into the body”
* Why breaking the script makes you sound natural on the day
* When to let go and trust yourself
