3 Ways to Learn Character Voices — One Is Way Faster

What is the best way to get better at the skill of doing character voices? Whether it’s for improv, roleplaying, acting — whatever. You’ve probably tried a few things. I know I have.

In this video I go through three ways people try to learn character voices. And, you know, one of them I think is maybe better than the others.

Here’s what I cover:

* Watching YouTube videos — which, you know, we all do. The problem is, one video says do this, another says do that, and you’ve got no way of knowing which one actually works for you.
* Just experimenting on your own — which is valuable, don’t get me wrong. But it’s slow. And you can’t hear what you sound like from the outside. Trust me, I’ve tried.
* A structured learning environment with other people — this is the one where I noticed the biggest difference in my own voice work. And the reason is kind of weird: it’s about fear. Controlled fear. When you’re doing a weird voice and there’s someone else in the room — or on the call — you hold yourself back a bit. And that’s actually the point. You work through that, and you unlock things you literally can’t reach on your own.

Also, if you’ve ever felt silly doing a voice at a D&D table while everyone else is just… talking normally — yeah, same. That feeling is kind of the whole thing.

🗣️ So, I just launched something called Character Voice Lab. It’s a 4-week live online program. Cohort-based, so you’re learning alongside other people — not just watching videos on your own. I’m not going to do the whole sales pitch thing here because that’s not what this video is. But if you’re curious, the link’s below.
